Our practical answer: consider Rocket Japanese if you want audio conversations, explanations and writing study in one course. Before paying, inspect the part you need most: understanding speech, reading without romanization, or practicing written characters. An audio preview alone cannot tell you whether the writing activities will suit you.

This is a researched buying guide, not a report of completing the paid course. We inspected public provider pages and sample controls on November 2, 2026. We did not enroll, evaluate pronunciation scores or test handwriting feedback. Japanese provider links on this page are ordinary links.

Watch: what should you check before buying?

Watch the buying guide on YouTube. Follow the illustrated preview example, then use the four-part note below to separate what you tried from what remains untested. This is researched guidance, not a full paid-course test. Dated prices and sources follow below.

What you can inspect without buying

The public Level 1 page includes a 16:31 introduction player and visible transcript. Our brief check started and stopped playback and observed the timer advance; we did not assess the full recording. Nearby phrase cards show Japanese text, reading support, romanization and English, with tutor-audio and recording controls. We did not use a microphone.

The writing section describes a script-writer tool, but we did not demonstrate a working writing exercise there. This leaves a useful question for a trial: what does the exercise ask you to produce, and what feedback does it give? It does not establish that the paid tool is missing or ineffective. The provider offers trial signup without a credit card; signup is separate from the public page inspection described here.

Your four-part preview note

Copy these prompts onto paper. Choose one task and record what you can actually try. No answers are collected by this page.

  1. My task: understand a greeting, read a short phrase, or practice a written character.
  2. My evidence: a public sample, an available trial lesson, or only a description.
  3. The help I used: audio replay, romanization, translation or a worked example.
  4. Still untested: the specific practice or feedback I need to inspect before paying.

Fictional example: a learner follows a greeting while reading its romanization. That observation says nothing yet about reading the Japanese text without that support. The next check is a suitable reading task, not purchasing more levels automatically.

Repeat the note for writing if that is part of your goal. This is a purchase worksheet, not a proficiency test. Leave untested items blank.

Course labels and JLPT scope

Rocket sells three course levels. Its course overview maps Level 1 to JLPT N5 and Levels 2 and 3 together to N4. The official JLPT descriptions describe N4 and N5 as basic Japanese understanding, with reading and listening benchmarks.

Read the provider's advanced course label in that context. It is not independent proof of advanced overall proficiency or guaranteed exam readiness. We have not verified the course alignment or measured speaking outcomes. If an exam is your goal, compare its official requirements with the actual material and your remaining gaps.

Compare the full commitment

The live Japanese pricing page displayed these amounts on November 2, 2026. These are listed USD prices before applicable taxes, not a completed checkout quote or a promise of your current offer.

Listed Japanese purchase options, checked November 2, 2026
Selected accessPayment shownListed total before tax
Level 1One payment$149.95
Levels 1 and 2One payment$299.90
Levels 1, 2 and 3One payment$449.85
Three-level payment planSix monthly payments of $75$450.00

The installment option spreads the purchase across payments. Do not assume it is an indefinitely renewing subscription or that its first payment alone secures permanent access. Confirm the selected levels, tax, total and access conditions at checkout. We did not enter payment information.

The detailed Level 1 page and pricing table showed different lesson and hour counts. We have not resolved the difference, so we do not blend their inventories or use advertised hours to predict your completion time.

Refunds, cancellation and access are separate checks

Rocket's dedicated refund policy starts a payment plan's 60-day window at the first payment. It says eligible refunds within that window cover payments made during it; afterward cancellation can stop future charges without refunding earlier payments. Its general FAQ ties lifetime access to completing all six payments.

Confirm your purchase channel and access consequences before relying on early cancellation. We have not tested a refund or verified the exact access cutoff. Apple purchases have separate refund handling.

A useful next step

Start with the public introduction, then inspect the reading or writing task you care about in an available sample or trial. Before buying, name the selected levels, full commitment and practice you expect to repeat. A long feature list does not answer those questions for you.
