Before repeating the phrase again, name what failed: listening, starting a recording, finishing it, or receiving feedback. A working speaker does not establish that the microphone is available. A low rating does not, by itself, tell you whether the problem is speech, capture or recognition.
This guide organizes Rocket’s current instructions and browser-provider guidance into a short troubleshooting routine. We have not recorded a voice, tested recognition accuracy, used the paid course or verified these fixes across devices. The illustrations are ours; they do not reproduce Rocket’s interface. No purchase is needed to use this guide.
Watch: Rocket Record won’t record? What to check first
Use our fictional example to separate playback, recording and feedback, then document one change and its result. This video uses Elise AI narration and our own illustrations; it is not a microphone or recognition-accuracy test. Video added October 27, 2026.
Choose the symptom first
- No tutor sound: begin with playback volume and output. Do not use the microphone checks below as a diagnosis of silent speakers.
- Recording will not start: inspect the input device, permissions and supported setup.
- Recording starts but ends too soon: follow the early-cutoff branch.
- A recording produces an unexpected rating: investigate the capture conditions before drawing conclusions about ability.
Our suggested method is to change one thing, repeat the same short task and write down what happened. If you change browser, headset and phrase together, you lose the chance to identify which change mattered.
If recording will not start
Rocket advises checking that the microphone is connected, unmuted and selected as the input. Its FAQ recommends Chrome or Safari for recording; other supported browsers can have language-specific limits. See the System and browser requirements section of Rocket’s FAQ for your exact combination.
Desktop Chrome: inspect this site’s permission
Google’s microphone instructions describe Settings → Privacy and security → Site settings → Microphone. Check the selected input and the entry for the Rocket site you are actually using. If you want to record there, allow that site’s microphone request. You may also need to allow Chrome access in your operating system. A work or school administrator may control these settings.
Do not enable every site or grant camera access just to troubleshoot voice input. If your settings look different, follow the current browser help rather than hunting for an icon copied from an older screenshot. On Windows, Microsoft’s microphone privacy guidance explains the separate device/app permission layer.
Phone app or Amazon tablet
Rocket’s app guidance lists Microphone and Speech Recognition permissions for Apple devices; for Android it identifies the Google app and microphone permissions for both apps. It says Rocket Record is unavailable on Amazon tablets. These are provider statements, not our device tests. Use the matching section of the official FAQ; browser instructions and app instructions are not interchangeable.
If the recording stops early
Rocket recommends rehearsing the phrase, avoiding long pauses and checking the selected microphone. This is a troubleshooting suggestion, not a guaranteed fix. Source: Rocket’s early-cutoff FAQ.
Try this original observation routine: keep the same short phrase, note whether the recording starts, then note whether it reaches the end. Do not keep changing the sentence to chase a score. If it still stops at the same point, record that detail for support.
If ratings seem inconsistent
Rocket suggests a quiet setting, suitable microphone positioning, supported browser and stable connection. Source: Rocket’s inconsistent-ratings FAQ.
A rating is one piece of exercise feedback, not proof of conversational fluency or a diagnosis of a learner’s pronunciation. We have not established Rocket’s scoring formula or measured false rejections. Keep the technical observation separate from a learning question: “Did the recording capture the whole phrase?” is different from “Can I use that phrase without reading it?”
A support note that is more useful than “it does not work”
Keep this note locally. This page has no form and collects no answers.
- Setup: device, operating system, browser or app version, course language and lesson.
- Symptom: no start, early cutoff, no result or unexpected rating. Copy the exact error wording if there is one.
- One change: what you changed and the result of the next attempt.
- Question: what support needs to confirm about that setup.
Fictional example: “Tutor audio plays. Recording does not start. I checked the site’s microphone permission; the symptom stayed the same. Is my browser and course-language combination supported?” This is not a recorded test result.
If the appropriate checks do not resolve it, use the contact link in Rocket’s official help page. Share only relevant details; leave passwords, payment information and unrelated student records out of screenshots. We have not contacted support for you.
Return to the learning task
Once recording is usable, a useful next question is what you can recall or say without the answer visible. Our Rocket Spanish review and public sample walkthrough distinguish a sample inspection from paid-course experience. If the obstacle is entering written French, use the separate French dictation and accent-entry check.
