Before choosing either program, inspect one short practice task and write down what your payment buys. Rocket sells selected Spanish levels. The current Rosetta Stone US-facing page offers Sapphire subscriptions with access to multiple languages. An older lifetime license and a current Sapphire subscription should not be treated as interchangeable.
Our starting point: investigate Rocket if you want audio practice alongside dedicated language and culture explanations. Investigate Rosetta Stone if you want to inspect its immersive lesson sequence and current practice tools. These are reasons to preview, not findings that one method produces better results.
Watch: what are you really buying?
The video walks through public preview boundaries, included access and renewal checks using original illustrations. It avoids exact prices; use the dated costs and sources below. This is public research, not a paid-course test.
Research limits and disclosure
We reviewed public provider pages and inspected limited public entry points. We have not completed either paid course, measured learning gains, tested recognition accuracy or compared full lesson sequences. Learning Shortlist has a Rocket affiliate relationship; Rosetta Stone references are ordinary links. Original illustrations explain the decision and do not depict a tested product interface.
What can you actually try without buying?
Rocket's public Colors in Spanish page showed vocabulary, tutor-audio and recording controls and practice sections during our saved inspection. We opened flashcard controls, but did not record speech or evaluate audio quality. The public vocabulary page is not the whole paid course. Rocket's separate trial should be inspected for the levels and lesson types you need.
For Rosetta, we selected Spanish (Latin America), Unit 1 Language Basics, Basic sentences, Fundamentals part 1 and Start. The public practice route opened without an account, then asked for a voice type to configure speech recognition. We stopped there without selecting a profile or granting microphone access. We did not submit an exercise answer or observe scoring. That is a concrete access boundary, not a failed lesson or proof of full free access.
Rosetta's official Getting Started documentation distinguishes limited unsigned web practice from its mobile trial. The latter becomes a paid monthly subscription unless cancelled. Do not confuse browsing a sample with starting that trial. The support page also lists device requirements; check your exact device before relying on the app.
Compare the task, not the feature count
Rocket describes podcast-style Audio lessons, Language and Culture explanations and reinforcement activities. A learner can ask whether the explanation is useful and whether the follow-up response is manageable. We have not established the difficulty of paid lessons from the sample.
Rosetta's current offering includes immersive lessons, pronunciation feedback, flashcards and newer tools. Chat Missions are AI-assisted typed conversations requiring an active Sapphire subscription in a browser. They are not a live tutor or evidence that spoken conversation has been assessed. They also offer translation controls, so a blanket claim that every Rosetta feature avoids translation would be inaccurate. Human tutoring is a separately purchased service; do not count it as included in the base subscription.
A fair preview note records four things: the task you opened, what you were asked to do, any explanation or permission you needed, and whether you would repeat that task. If one preview stops at setup, record that difference rather than inventing a side-by-side score.
Dated costs and access
Observed US-facing public prices October 29, 2026: Rocket Level 1 $149.95, Levels 1–2 $299.90 and Levels 1–3 $449.85 USD before tax. Rosetta displayed $19.99 billed monthly or $159 billed yearly, with $13.25 shown as a monthly equivalent. The yearly equivalent is not monthly billing. Final checkout currency, taxes and eligibility were not inspected. Offers may change.
The observed Rosetta page listed all 25 languages, including Latin American and Spain Spanish. No lifetime offer appeared on that page. This does not establish that lifetime products are unavailable everywhere, nor that older purchases include Sapphire features. Check the exact license and seller rather than relying on an old review or a lifetime badge.
For Rocket installments, the pricing FAQ says cancellation is possible; the general FAQ ties lifetime access to all six payments. We have not confirmed the exact access cutoff after voluntary cancellation. For Rosetta, cancellation follows the purchase channel, and current direct Sapphire purchases have a 14-day satisfaction guarantee according to support. Retailer policies differ. Rosetta's July 28, 2026 terms say direct website Personal Edition subscriptions renew for the same term at then-current fees plus applicable tax; initial discounts do not apply to renewal. Cancellation leaves access until the current term ends, without a prorated refund for that term. Check your purchase channel and any applicable return policy. We did not inspect a final checkout or calculate a future renewal quote. Cancellation and refund are different questions.
Which should you preview first?
If you want explanations alongside an audio-led Spanish course, begin with Rocket's relevant sample and level preview. If you want to explore Rosetta's immersive sequence and multiple-language membership, inspect its public route first and decide whether the actual practice fits your routine. Neither preference proves a learning advantage. If you already hold a Rosetta license, establish what it includes before paying again. If your budget is zero, use accessible public practice or investigate library access instead of starting a paid plan.
Next step: write your intended Spanish variety, one realistic study slot, the practice you want, and your maximum total commitment. Then inspect the matching preview and plan. Use our existing Rocket package guide for level-selection details; this page addresses the separate choice between providers.

Payment-plan policy checked November 2, 2026: Rocket’s dedicated refund policy starts the 60-day window at the first payment and says refunds requested within it cover payments made during that window. After 60 days, cancellation can prevent further charges but does not refund past payments. Its general FAQ makes lifetime access conditional on all six payments. The exact access cutoff after voluntary cancellation remains unverified. Ask support to confirm charges and access for your purchase channel; we have not tested cancellation.
