Research checked October 31, 2026. This comparison uses official public product pages and policies, not paid-course completion or measured learning outcomes. BJU and Abeka links are ordinary citations; neither earns us a commission.

Start with the enrollment decision. Buying BJU video lessons does not enroll your child in an accredited school. Abeka offers both accredited enrollment and unaccredited video instruction. Comparing a BJU kit price with an Abeka accredited package without naming that difference can lead you to buy the wrong service.

Both offer Christian curriculum. If that perspective fits your household, choose the records and oversight arrangement you need, then preview the intended grade and subjects. Neither a video teacher nor an accreditation label tells you how much help your particular child will need.

Watch: what are you actually buying?

Watch the comparison on YouTube. Separate video curriculum from enrollment, identify the parent's responsibilities and use the four-question buying checklist. Sourced, dated costs appear below.

Four options that should not be collapsed into two

Curriculum access and enrollment are different purchases
OptionWhat to understand before buying
BJU video curriculumRecorded instruction and course materials. The purchase itself is not school enrollment; plan your own recordkeeping arrangement.
BJU plus AHEThe Academy of Home Education is a separate application and service. Check eligibility, accredited versus standard service, fees and reporting before assuming enrollment is included.
Abeka Independent StudyUnaccredited video instruction with home-teacher-managed records. Do not assume it supplies the same official records as accredited enrollment.
Abeka accredited enrollmentAcademic recordkeeping comes with required supervision, work submissions and grade validation. It does not remove the parent from assessment.

What will the parent still do?

BJU's FAQ describes online assessments for most courses in grades 5–12, while younger grades use paper assessments. Some responses, including essay or map work, still require manual grading. Check the actual course rather than treating “online” as “everything is automatically graded.”

Abeka's accredited agreement calls for supervising quizzes and tests, including digital assessments, and submitting required work. Parent-assigned grades are subject to validation. Its unaccredited option changes the records arrangement, not your child's need for someone to notice confusion and help.

Our practical suggestion: picture a morning when the learner finishes the video but cannot explain the assignment. Decide who will sit with them, review the example and judge the next attempt. Put that time in your weekly plan before filling the day with lessons.

Grade 5 example: compare scope before totals

We used online/streaming packages with books as a bounded example. These are not identical baskets. BJU's listed Grade 5 kit covers heritage studies, science, English, spelling, reading, math and handwriting; it does not list a separate Bible course. Abeka's Grade 5 overview lists Bible, arithmetic, language, reading, spelling, history, science and health. Check each current contents list and required editions, especially when reusing books.

BJU lists an average of 2 hours 5 minutes of video per day for this kit. That is video time, not a measured total school day or a promise about parent time. Written work, breaks and reteaching need their own allowance.

Dated costs: what the public pages actually displayed

Selected Grade 5 packages and separate services
PurchaseObserved amountImportant boundary
BJU Online with Books, SKU 470898$1,149Curriculum kit, without AHE enrollment.
BJU displayed payment plan$179.84 down + 9 × $113.24 = $1,199Includes the stated $50 payment-plan fee; applicable tax extra.
AHE grades 1–8 accredited service$75 application + $479 yearly serviceSeparate from curriculum, subject to eligibility; both fees described as nonrefundable.
Abeka Grade 5 full-year streaming + books, accredited$1,442Selected configuration verified on the public product page.
Abeka displayed installments10 × $152.70 = $1,527; or 6 × $248.67 = $1,492.02Arithmetic from displayed payments, not a cancel-any-month subscription or final quote.

Sources: BJU selected kit and payment display, AHE current fees and requirements, and Abeka selected package. An Abeka promotional banner was visible; we have not applied an assumed discount to these displayed amounts.

For illustration, $1,149 + $75 + $479 is $1,703 for the BJU kit plus the listed AHE accredited application/service amounts. That is not an all-in offer: testing, any applicable late fees and other costs still need checking. AHE also lists a different standard service; do not substitute its fee for accredited service.

We did not obtain a verified changed price for Abeka's unaccredited configuration, so no price is assigned to it here. Select that option and confirm the resulting product title, contents and total directly. A seller's competitor table is not a substitute for the other provider's current fees.

Access dates and cancellation deserve a separate check

BJU has conflicting access-start wording. Its product page says the order date controls access, with 20 months for February–May orders and 16 months for orders on or after June 1. Its video agreement and returns page use ship-date wording; the FAQ also contains both formulations. Ask for the exact expiration date for your order in writing, especially if buying well before your intended start. We have not resolved that contradiction with the provider.

BJU's return policy requires approval and generally unused materials. It describes a full-refund window of 30 days from receipt or online availability, a later restocking fee, and no refund after 90 days; eTextbooks and partial-kit returns have restrictions. Read the linked policy for your purchase.

Abeka describes 12 months for a full-year program and six for a semester, with a chosen begin date. Its pricing and cancellation policy ties credit to that assigned begin date and required returns: the first 30 days differ from days 30–60 and 60–90, and there is no refund after 90 days. Streaming access can be suspended when cancellation is requested while charges continue until required materials are returned. Installments spread a commitment; they do not make it a monthly trial.

Use this four-question buying worksheet

Copy these questions into your notes for each exact package. This is our decision aid, not a provider form or a placement test.

  1. Who delivers the explanation? Preview the intended subject and grade, then have the learner explain one idea back.
  2. Who checks the written work? Name the person who will handle mistakes, essays and any manually graded items.
  3. Who keeps and validates records? Write down the enrollment service, required submissions and deadlines, or your own records plan.
  4. What expires, and when? Record access dates, full payment obligation, return conditions and any materials you must send back.

For lesson previews, start at the sample section of each linked product page. BJU exposes a Grade 5 sample playlist; Abeka exposes Audio/Video Samples. We verified the public product information but have not completed a comparative viewing or paid-course test, so we do not rate their teaching effectiveness. Use our five-session observation checklist to distinguish what you actually observe from a first impression.

Which deserves a closer look?

Investigate BJU video curriculum if you want its course materials and Hub workflow and can handle records yourself, or are willing to investigate AHE separately. Verify grading responsibilities and your access expiration before purchasing.

Investigate Abeka accredited enrollment if you specifically want its records service and can meet the supervision and submission requirements. If you prefer to manage records yourself, compare Independent Study on its own terms and current price.

If the real uncertainty is whether either daily routine fits your child, preview first. An administrative package cannot settle that question. For a narrower comparison of parent teaching responsibilities, see Teaching Textbooks vs Math-U-See.
