Budget for the household and the courses separately.
RPC’s FAQ lists a $250 annual household membership with automatic renewal, or $350 without it, plus $50 per course per student. I calculate the total from the actual course list rather than treating membership as an all-inclusive price. Source: RPC FAQ.
The formula I use
Household membership + ($50 × total student-course purchases). A student taking five paid courses contributes five purchases. Two students taking five each contribute ten. These examples assume every selected course has the listed $50 fee; check the course catalog for exceptions.

These are illustrative purchase totals, not recommendations for a complete course load or a quote from RPC. Different subjects, levels, or outside resources will change your budget.
Why the family total matters
In the two-student example, $750 works out to $375 per student. That doesn’t mean the second student is free: the shared membership spreads across more students while course costs still accumulate. I’d compare the household total with competitors’ actual family quotes, including available discounts.
What I’d put beside the course fees
- Optional materials: books, printing, supplies, and anything listed in the selected courses.
- Support: tutoring or another resource if one subject needs a different explanation.
- Technology: reliable access to a suitable device and connection.
- Commitment: the renewal date, current cancellation process, and applicable refund terms.
I would not assign a made-up dollar amount to those items. I’d price the ones the family actually expects to use. An inexpensive program becomes less inexpensive if you immediately replace several subjects.
My budget worksheet
Before checkout, I’d write one line for each student: course name, listed price, required materials, and any supplemental resource. Then I’d add the membership once and record which renewal option I selected. I’d save a copy of the order and the terms shown at purchase.
Is the membership charged per student?
The published membership is for the household; the FAQ separately describes course fees per student. That distinction is built into the examples above.
Is automatic renewal the better value?
It has a $100 lower listed membership price. I’d choose it only if I was comfortable with the recurring commitment and had recorded the renewal date. The lower price alone would not make the decision for me.
